Grand Rounds
A middle-aged patient presented to the Bascom Palmer Institute with complaints of persistent floaters in left eye one month after a bicycle accident s/p laser retinopexy. A full-thickness macular hole was subsequently found on exam in the left eye. The patient subsequently underwent pars plana vitrectomy/brilliant blue/membrane peel for the traumatic macular hole. The hole closed with vision improving to 20/30 OS post ILM peel/pars plana vitrectomy. The etiology of macular hole pathology will be discussed along with a review of the Gass and IVTS staging criteria. Surgical and medical management of macular holes will be reviewed and discussed along with updates on newer treatment modalities, such as autologous retinal patch grafts and amniotic membrane grafts.
