Retinal Detachment Associated with Retinal Dialysis

A soccer player presented to the Bascom Palmer Emergency Department after failing a driver’s test. Past medical history was unremarkable. Exam was notable for visual acuity of 20/20 in the right eye and 20/300 in the left eye. Intraocular pressures were 21 and 19 mm Hg in the right and left eyes, respectively. Anterior segment examination was unremarkable. Posterior segment examination demonstrated a macula-sparing retinal detachment in the right eye and a macula-involving retinal detachment in the left eye. Retinal dialyses were observed in both eyes. The patient was treated with scleral buckling in both eyes. At postoperative year 2, the retina was reattached in both eyes and visual acuity was 20/20 and 20/200.
