Dystrophic Epidermolysis Bullosa

A child presented to BPEI in 2013 with symblepharon and limbal stem cell deficiency in both eyes. His visual acuity (VA) was 20/40 in his right eye and 20/80 in the left. He came back one year later in 2014 with an advanced inferior symblepharon, covering the visual axis inferiorly and partial limbal stem cell deficiency in his left eye. His VA was 20/50 in his right eye and hand motions in the left. It was decided to perform a symblepharonlysis +repeat Amniotic membrane transplant in 2014. Unfortunately, by 2015 the symblepharon had recurred and a new symblepharonlysis with platelet-rich in growth factors (PRGF) was performed in his left eye in January 2016. His vision improved to 20/150 and a partial recurrence is under observation since the last surgery. By 2022 his scarring and symblepharon recurred with a VA of Hand motions in the right eye and 20/400 in the left eye. Surgical intervention was repeated with a novel gene therapy applied with now 4 months of follow-up.
