Abstract
A patient with a past medical history of liver cirrhosis, presented to the neuro-ophthalmology clinic with blurry vision in both eyes and nyctalopia that started around a year ago. Ophthalmological exam was notable for a visual acuity of 20/40 in both eyes, reduced color vision, and macular mottling. Ancillary testing showed bilateral visual field defects, and rod-cone dysfunction on full-field electroretinogram. Serum vitamin A was found to be low (7 mcg/dl). After initiation of vitamin A supplementations, the patient reported improvement in his night vision in addition to objective improvement of visual acuity and color vision. Repeated full-field electroretinogram also showed improvement rods and cones responses.
