Mycobacterium Abscessus Keratitis

A patient was referred for management of a corneal ulcer in their right eye. Initial exam revealed VA OD CF with diffuse corneal epithelial defect, infiltrate, and endothelial plaque and anterior inflammation with a hypopyon. Corneal cultures were positive for Mycobacterium abscessus. The patient underwent a diagnostic pars plana vitrectomy for concern of membrane formation. There was no posterior involvement and vitreous cultures were negative. They were treated with topical amikacin and tobramycin. We will discuss nontuberculosis mycobacterial ocular infections with particular attention to keratitis. We will evaluate their clinical course and management as well as the challenges.
