Sympathetic Ophthalmia

A patient presented via ambulance after metal crowbar hit eye at work. He was found to have a severe ruptured globe. Repair was attempted but damage was too posterior and severe for complete closure. Enucleation recommended but patient declined. Patient presented several weeks later with panuveitis and exudative retinal detachments in non-traumatic eye. Patient was diagnosed with Sympathetic Ophthalmia and started on high dose corticosteroids and was subsequently transitioned to steroid-sparing immunosuppression with resolution in the retinal detachments and improvement in visual acuity back to baseline.
