Abstract
A patient presents for cataract surgery evaluation with bilateral guttata and specular microscopy consistent with Fuchs endothelial dystrophy. Preoperative vision was 20/40 in the right eye with pachymetry of 595. Cataract surgery was uncomplicated, however postoperatively patient developed visually significant corneal edema requiring prolonged hypertonic saline and steroid drops. At postoperative week 10, vision had improved to 20/40 with a pachymetry of 631. In the left eye, patient was offered enrollment into the EMMECELL phase I trial prior to cataract surgery. This trial investigates the safety of a novel therapy EO2002, magnetic human cultured endothelial cells, for the treatment of corneal edema from endothelial dysfunction. Preoperative vision was 20/50 with pachymetry of 640. By postoperative week 2.5, vision improved to 20/40 with pachymetry of 591. We present photographic documentation of the post-treatment course after EO2002 injection.
