    A 44-year-old man and 19-year-old man, neither with initially disclosed medical history, present with severe vision loss one eye. Both patients have findings consistent with retinal detachment associated with proliferative retinopathy in the effected eye and findings consistent with proliferative retinopathy in the asymptomatic fellow eye. Based upon clinical exam and additional history both patients diagnosed with combined rhegmatogenous and tractional retinal detachment caused by sickle cell disease. Both patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy with retinectomy, drainage of fluid and tamponade with silicone oil. At most recent follow-up both patients had attached retinas under oil and improved vision relative to presentation.
